Entry #7- hashTAG, You're it!

Hello, and welcome back!

Hashtags are everywhere: on social media platforms, TV, and almost anything visible to the public. These have become more and more popular, but what do they mean? Or what are they for? I have always seen hashtags as tags people use to categorize specific posts. I used it back when I was younger, and I stopped because it was a lot of work to use all these tags to get views or likes.

Hashtags became more and more popular around 2007 and have gained traction since, and more people have adopted this "pound sign" to label or categorize what they posted. So, let’s say there is a photo of a mother with her child, tags such as #MomLife would be used to label this photo along with hundreds of other posts of mothers with their children. Maybe a strong woman who beat cancer, #FCancer, #CancerSucks, etc., can be used, and searching these tags will show many other posts and pictures of related categories.

Hashtags can be used for more than personal posts. Big companies can use these to promote their business and spread the word of their success stories. Non-profit organizations can use hashtags to support their local communities with marathons, bike races, food panties, etc.

Hashtags have a very powerful effect on the internet. Using them can spread the word worldwide, and billions of people can see them. You can support or join these groups in making a difference and showing off the greatness of a community or group.

Hashtags are used to pull people with similar interests together and share their unique forms of these interests. Another example is the crocheting of animals. Sharing templates or their design, giving and getting advice, and seeking ideas to expand what you already know. Maybe just trying something new. Hashtags are for everyone, and with social media, there are also negatives, such as bullying and opposing views of certain communities and groups.

Hashtags have come a long way and have become popular. Although I do not use them anymore on my own personal content, I do search using tags, which help me even minimize specific interests. What are your thoughts? Do you use hashtags? Until next time! Bye!
